Done correctly, there should be one lash extension being applied to one of your real lashes. There should not be clumping of multiple real lashes to any extension. This clumping means that the lash technician was careless and/or poorly trained and this is what would cause damage to your natural lashes.
Done correctly, there are a couple of possible scenarios which are normal and are completely safe.
Scenario 1: Your real lash grows out and sheds, you would lose the lash extension with it. No damage done.
Scenario 2: Your real lash keeps growing normally and the lash extension stays connected. Eventually, the extension may look silly because it will not be close to the lash line anymore in which case, the technician should remove the extension from your natural lash and apply a new one. No harm done as the real lash has continued to grow the entire time.
The problem with clumping is that not all of your lashes grow at one time so if multiple lashes are stuck together, when one or two lashes are ready to shed, the others which are still strong get pulled out with the entire clump because the weight is too much and it makes your younger lashes weak.
All in all, if done correctly, growth is not at all disturbed by well placed lash extensions. Now, not everyone out there does a professional job, so this is where you should either know who you are going to or see lots of before and after pictures.
